Middle School (MYP)

In Design, you will learn how to solve problems and challenges relating to both contrived and open contexts. You do this with the aim that by the end of your time in IST, you will have the skills to approach a problem and create either a physical, a system based and / or a digital based product to solve the problem.

The overarching aim for English Language Acquisition at IST is to enable you to become a critical and competent communicator. Therefore, you will learn to speak clearly and convey ideas confidently using Standard English. You will learn to justify ideas with reasons; ask questions to check understanding; develop vocabulary and build knowledge; negotiate; evaluate and build on the ideas of others and select the appropriate register for effective communication. You will continue to develop your knowledge of and skills in writing, refining your drafting skills and developing resilience to write at length. You will be taught to write formal and academic essays as well as to write imaginatively for a variety of purposes and audiences across a range of contexts.

MYP Individuals and Societies incorporates disciplines traditionally studied under the general term “the humanities” (such as history), as well as disciplines in the social sciences (such as geography). This subject encourages you to respect and understand the world around you and equips you with the necessary skills to inquire into historical, contemporary, geographical, social, religious, and cultural factors that have an impact on individuals, societies and environments.

The study of Individuals and Societies helps you to develop your identity as individual and as responsible members of local and global communities through exiting topics such as: continents, World’s religions, Ancient World, Middle Ages, modern and contemporary World, climates, weather, ecosystems etc.

Throughout the Middle Years Programme you will study a wide variety of topics covering all 4 branches of Mathematics:

• Number
• Algebra
• Geometry and trigonometry
• Statistics and probability

You will develop the skills to identify and express number patterns, utilise calculation and estimation skills. You will learn about the important concept of Algebra for problem solving and understand how it uses symbols and letters to represent numbers, quantities and operations.  You will study shapes and spaces in 2D and 3D and develop skills for measuring and manipulating objects using geometry and trigonometry. You will gain an understanding of data handling and learn how to collate, interpret and represent data in a meaningful way. In addition to this, you will also learn about probability and how to calculate ‘chance’.

One of our school’s main aims is to help students to develop the knowledge, attitudes and skills they need to participate actively and responsibly in a changing and interrelated world. This means to guide them to become independent learners who can recognise relationships between what they study in our school and the world outside. Well, their chance to change the world has finally arrived!

The Personal Project represents a clear expression of what the student has learned during their years in MYP and it is a significant body of work produced over an extended period. It is their chance to follow a passion and create something meaningful, for example to write a piece of music, build a mini bike, conduct a science experiment, write a story, film, edit a video…The possibilities are endless!

There are three parts involved in the process: the Product, the Process Journal and the Write-up ( which describes the goals of the Project, explains its connection to the Global Context and outlines the steps taken to complete it, plus an analysis of how effectively they pursued and completed their goals).

The students were given a lot of support material from the school and they benefit from the guidance of an individual teacher who acts as their personal project supervisor.

Our experience from the previous years proves to us that working with the Personal Project is an extraordinary and very rewarding journey for both, students and teachers. We wish them all good luck with their work and we are looking forward to seeing what the outcomes are!

You will learn how to write, read and communicate ideas based on personal engagement in different kinds of creative processes.

You will learn how to look for pictures in poems, to dramatize fairy tales, and how to communicate and express feelings, dreams and hope in a diary.

In the PYP, you will learn:

• Fundamental movement skills, which include locomotion/travelling, manipulation and stability.
• Healthy living, which includes growth and development, personal safety and injury prevention.
• Active participation, which includes physical activity, physical fitness, living skills and safety.

All of the above will come under the umbrella of the PYP Personal, Social and Physical Education.

In the MYP, you will learn:

• Physical Activity
• Active Living
• Healthy Living
• Living Skills

These will all covered through MYP Physical and Health Education.

During your time at IST you will study a range of topics covering areas from three science disciplines (Chemistry, Biology and Physics).   A few examples of topics you will cover are `What are living organisms made of?’, ‘How can you change the speed of a chemical reaction?’ and ‘How do we see the world around us?’ These topics will allow you to build on your prior leaning to develop your knowledge and understanding of scientific concepts, as well as developing your knowledge and understanding of new scientific ideas.  You should also gain an awareness of the role of science in today’s society as we look at real life applications of scientific ideas.   This will allow you to discover the link between science, ethics and the environment.

Spanish is the second most popular and spoken language in the world. It is the official language in 24 countries in Latino-America and Europe. In Spanish, you will go through topics like “Me and my Family”, “Holidays and Traveling”, “Latin Culture”, etc. With these and other topics you will be able to communicate and express yourself in a different form, improve your self-confidence. In addition, it will allow you to develop awareness and understanding of a whole new culture.
