What will I learn in English Language Acquisition?
The overarching aim for English Language Acquisition at IST is to enable you to become a critical and competent communicator. Therefore, you will learn to speak clearly and convey ideas confidently using Standard English. You will learn to justify ideas with reasons; ask questions to check understanding; develop vocabulary and build knowledge; negotiate; evaluate and build on the ideas of others and select the appropriate register for effective communication. You will continue to develop your knowledge of and skills in writing, refining your drafting skills and developing resilience to write at length. You will be taught to write formal and academic essays as well as to write imaginatively for a variety of purposes and audiences across a range of contexts.
How will I learn English Language Acquisition in school?
The enhancing of your vocabulary will arise naturally from your reading and writing in a variety of genres as well as discussions and debates in class. You will also complete fun and engaging assignments related to real-life contexts. Through personal and group inquiries, you will learn the relationships between words, nuances in meaning and linguistic and literary terminology and how to become confident in using them. This is done through consolidation, practice and discussion of language. We also provide library facilities and you will be encouraged to read widely for pleasure at home.

Communication and Thinking skills are perhaps some of the most important Approaches to Learning skills because you will need to be able to give well-structured descriptions and explanations, speculate, hypothesise and explore ideas, clarify your thinking as well as organise your ideas. All the skills of language are essential to participating fully as a member of society.
